Direct answers

What students ask about IELTS

Who provides IELTS preparation in Saudi Arabia?

Apostrophe Academy provides IELTS preparation for students in Saudi Arabia and the GCC across all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — with practice in question formats and timing. The exam itself is delivered by the official authorised test centres, not by us.

What is IELTS and who needs it?

IELTS is an English proficiency test used for university admission and for professional and migration purposes. It is typically needed by students applying to English-taught programs that require proof of language level.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

Academic is aimed at university admission and study; General Training is aimed at work, migration and training. Listening and Speaking are shared, while the Reading and Writing tasks differ. We identify which version you need from the requirements published by the institution you are applying to.

Should I take IELTS or TOEFL?

Start from the requirement of the university you are targeting: some accept both, some prefer one. After that, choose by the speaking format you handle better — IELTS speaking is a live interview, TOEFL speaking is recorded on a computer.

Who it's for

Is this service right for you?

  • A student who needs a recognised language certificate for admission
  • Applicants to universities in the UK, Australia, Canada or Europe
  • Anyone with a language base who needs to convert it into a band score
  • Anyone who needs direct writing correction and real speaking practice

Preparation path

How IELTS preparation runs

  1. Placement

An assessment showing the current level across the four skills.

  2. Choosing the version

Academic or General? The decision follows what your target institution requires.

  3. Skill building

Separate work on each skill according to the gaps the assessment showed.

  4. Writing and speaking

Repeated practice with direct correction — these two sections need feedback.

  5. Practice tests

Full tests in the exam format to measure performance against the clock.

  6. Readiness and registration

General guidance on registration steps and test day.

Clarity

What we do and what you do

What we do with you

  • Diagnose all four skills and build the plan on that.
  • Correct writing and train speaking.
  • Train exam format and time management.

What stays outside our control

  • Registering through the official test provider.
  • Practising consistently between sessions.
  • Verifying the required band with your target institution.

Which test fits you

IELTS or TOEFL? Start from what your institution asks for

  1. If your university accepts only one testThe decision is made for you: take the test they requireStart at the university's own admissions page — it is the only authority on what is accepted.
  2. If you are more comfortable speaking to a personIELTS usually suits you betterThe IELTS Speaking section is an interview with an examiner, whereas TOEFL responses are recorded on a computer.
  3. If you type quickly and work well on screenTOEFL may be the more natural environmentTOEFL is delivered entirely on computer and combines skills within the same tasks.
  4. If your goal is migration or work rather than studyCheck which IELTS version is requiredAcademic and General Training serve different purposes, and the requesting body decides which one you need.

Neither test is universally easier. The right decision starts with the institution you are applying to, then with how you personally perform. Always confirm requirements on the university's own site and the test owner's site.

Preparation timeline

From placement to test day

  1. Step one

    Placement and choosing the version

We measure all four skills and confirm whether your institution requires Academic or General Training.

  2. Step two

    Language before strategy

If the underlying language level is below target, exam strategy alone will not raise the band. We work on the language first.

  3. Step three

    Writing and Speaking with feedback

The productive skills do not improve by reading about them: you produce, get corrected, then produce again against the same feedback.

  4. Step four

    Full tests under exam timing

A full simulation of all four sections in order, because fatigue at the end of the test is part of the skill being measured.

  5. Before the test

    Registration and logistics

Registration, centres and fees are confirmed on the official IELTS site; we help you fit the date into your academic schedule.

The sequence is fixed; the duration differs from student to student depending on the placement result and the target band.

Checklists

Before booking your IELTS test

Confirm first

  • Do you need Academic or General Training?
  • What band does your target institution ask for?
  • Does it accept paper, computer-delivered, or both?
  • When do you actually need the result?

Preparation readiness

  • A diagnostic across all four skills.
  • Corrected writing practice, not just reading model answers.
  • Speaking practice with a real interlocutor.
  • Listening practice at exam timing.

Common mistakes

What usually stalls an IELTS band

  • Memorising ready-made introductions for the writing tasks. We build a flexible structure that works on any prompt, using the student's own language rather than memorised templates.
  • Practising Listening by pausing and replaying the recording repeatedly.Listening is first practised under test conditions; replaying belongs to the review stage only.
  • Reaching for difficult vocabulary in Speaking without controlling its meaning or pronunciation.Clarity and fluency beat display: precise language the student can use consistently.
  • Avoiding Reading practice because the timing feels impossible. We start with accuracy untimed, then reintroduce timing gradually until the pace becomes natural.

How the IELTS band score works

Each of the four sections receives its own band score, and those combine into one overall band. A single weak section pulls the overall score down even when the rest are strong, which is why we work all four skills rather than the strongest one.

Universities do not always look at the overall band alone; many set a minimum for each individual section. Before building the plan we identify the required band and any per-section minimum exactly as your target institution publishes it, and work towards that.

The preparation timeline, assessment to test day

  • An initial assessment that scores each skill separately
  • Setting the target band from the university's requirement, not a generic number
  • Building the weakest skills first, since they move the overall band most
  • Repeated writing correction and continuous speaking practice throughout
  • Full timed practice tests to measure readiness
  • Reviewing the practice result and choosing a registration date from it

Terminology

IELTS terminology in plain language

The official format, band system and fees are owned by the test organisers; official links are listed at the end of this page.

IELTS
An international English proficiency test measuring four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Many universities and organisations ask for it as evidence that you can study or work in English.
Academic and General Training
Two versions of the test. Academic is the usual one for university admission; General Training is typically used for migration or work-related purposes. The body you are applying to decides which version you need.
Band score
The way an IELTS result is reported, on a band scale, with a score for each skill and an overall score. Each university sets the band it accepts for its program.
Speaking section
A spoken interview with an examiner assessing fluency, vocabulary, accuracy and pronunciation — not whether your opinion on the topic is correct.

Honest fit

When IELTS may not be the test you need

  • If your university accepts only TOEFL or another alternative — check the published requirement on the program's official admissions page.
  • If what is required is an academic aptitude test such as the SAT rather than language evidence.
  • If your underlying English is still at an early stage; starting with General English is usually faster than going straight into test preparation.
  • If you need the General Training version for non-academic purposes, say so from the start, because the preparation differs.

Next step

What happens after you get in touch

None of these steps commits you to anything, and we do not ask for payment before the recommended path is clear to you.

  1. 1. You message us on WhatsApp or send the consultation form

Tell us your name, your study stage, your goal, and the deadline you are working towards if you have one. Every WhatsApp button on the site reaches the same center number.

  2. 2. A free academic consultation

A short conversation to understand where you are and what you are aiming at: what you have already tried, how much time you have, and what this track actually measures.

  3. 3. Placement across the four skills

You take a placement across the four skills, and we identify which skill is pulling your result down and which is already ready.

  4. 4. A written recommended path, then you decide

We summarise what we recommend and why, and what the alternative is if this track is not the right fit — including the possibility that you do not need the service right now.

Student success stories

We publish student stories only with their name and written consent, and we state an outcome only when it is documented by an official score report or admission letter held by the center.

No stories are published on this page yet

We would rather leave this space empty than write testimonials on anyone's behalf. It stays empty until a student shares their own story and permits us to publish their name and documented outcome.

FAQ

Questions students and parents ask

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

They differ in the Reading and Writing sections and in their typical purpose. We identify the version you need based on what your target institution requires.

Can I start without knowing my level?

We start with a placement assessment: it shows your baseline and which sections need the most focus.

What is IELTS and who is it for?

IELTS is an English proficiency test covering listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is for anyone who needs to evidence their English level for study, work or migration purposes, depending on the version required.

What is the difference between IELTS and General English?

General English builds the underlying language ability; IELTS preparation channels that ability into one specific test format with known assessment criteria. If your foundation is still weak, the first usually comes before the second.

Do I need a certain level before starting preparation?

We set no prerequisite, but the placement test shows whether it makes more sense to begin direct preparation or to build the foundation first.

How do I know the band my program requires?

From the official admissions page of the university or program. We do not publish unconfirmed requirements; we help you read the published condition during the consultation.
