The Digital SAT: Format and What Changed

The SAT is now delivered digitally and differs from the older paper version. This page explains what you need to know about the format before starting preparation.

Direct answers

What you need to know about the digital SAT

What is the difference between the digital and paper SAT?

The digital SAT is taken on a device through College Board's official app, uses shorter passages and an adaptive module structure. Older material built on the paper version no longer reflects the current exam.

What does it mean that the test is adaptive?

Each section has two modules, and how you perform in the first affects the second. In practice the start of a section matters, and practice should happen in the same platform. Official details are with College Board.

Should I practise on a device?

Yes. Reading on screen, using the app's tools and tracking the timer are skills you build by practice; they do not transfer automatically from paper.

FAQ

Questions students and parents ask

What is different about the digital SAT?

The exam is taken on a device through College Board's official app, and the section structure and passage style differ from the earlier paper version. Official details should be checked with College Board.

Is preparation different from the paper SAT?

Yes, because practice needs to mirror the digital testing environment, its tools and how time is managed inside it.

What does "digital SAT" mean?

That the test is taken on a device through a dedicated application rather than on paper, with on-screen tools and a different way of presenting questions. The official details sit with College Board.

Does it need separate training?

Usually short training is enough, but it matters: getting used to the tools and the on-screen rhythm prevents losing marks for non-academic reasons.
