College Board — dates and deadlines ↗In short
The essentials
- The official schedule is the only authoritative source for dates
- Every test date has an earlier registration deadline
- Center seats are limited and can sell out before the deadline
- Date choice depends on available preparation time and application deadlines
Direct answers
Direct answers on SAT test dates
We do not restate specific dates here because the schedule changes each academic year; the official College Board schedule is the reference.
When is the SAT held?
The SAT runs on set administration dates spread through the academic year, published by College Board in a single official schedule that lists each test date and its registration deadline.
Dates available outside the United States can be fewer than domestic ones, so students in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf should check the international schedule specifically before building a study plan.

What is the difference between the test date and the registration deadline?
The test date is the day you sit the exam; the registration deadline is an earlier cut-off after which booking for that administration closes — missing it means waiting for the next date.
Important exception: Late registration with an extra fee is sometimes available, but it is not guaranteed and depends on seat availability. Do not build your plan around it.
Which SAT date should I choose?
Choose a date far enough before your application deadline for the score to be released and sent, while still leaving realistic preparation weeks after your first practice test.
A practical method: start from the application deadline and work backwards — score sending, score release, test date, then preparation. What is left is your real window.
How many times can I take the SAT?
Nothing stops you registering for more than one administration; the practical limit is the schedule available to you and the seats at centres near you.
Retaking helps when you know precisely which section was weaker and prepare for it differently. Retaking with the same approach rarely changes the outcome.
The timeline
The SAT journey: before, during and after
Timing differs by student, depending on current level and target, and official dates are always checked with College Board.
- Before
Decide and prepare
- First confirm whether your target university or programme actually requires the SAT.
- Measure your current level with a full practice test before building a plan.
- Choose a test date that leaves realistic preparation time before your application deadline.
- Register early and reserve a centre, because seats can sell out before the deadline closes.
- Test day
What actually happens
- The test is digital and taken through the Bluebook app on an approved device.
- Bring the ID and admission ticket specified by College Board's official test-day instructions.
- Two sections: Reading and Writing, then Math, each delivered in two modules.
- The difficulty of the second module is set by your performance in the first module of that section.
- After
Your score and the next step
- Scores are released in your College Board account according to the official schedule for that administration.
- Read each section score, not just the total; that is what tells you where to improve.
- Compare your score against your target university's requirements before deciding to retake.
- Scores are sent to universities from your account, and official fees may apply.
Where to find the official schedule
International SAT dates are published on the official College Board site under the dates and deadlines page. We show the schedule as published with a last-checked date, but dates can be adjusted, so confirm on the official page before you book.
Three dates you must track per administration
- The test date itself
- The regular registration deadline (after which extra fees or restrictions may apply)
- The score release date, which decides whether your score arrives before your university deadline
How to choose the right date
Work backwards: fix your final university application deadline, choose a test date whose scores are released comfortably before it, then count the preparation weeks left between today and that date.
If those weeks are not enough for your current level, a later date with a structured plan usually beats an early date with an incomplete result. We help you decide this after a placement assessment.
